Project cargo transportation

Transportation of equipment is a priority in sustainable development of the Company’s shipping business in the segment of riverborne and seaborne traffic.

Over decades the shipping company gained a huge experience in transportation of project heavylift cargo and oversize equipment and is improving its expertise taking into account the increasing investments in production facilities projects in Russia, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan and Turkmenistan.

Volga Shipping Company delivers:

  • cargo of up to 50 meters in length, 6 meters in height and 12 meters in width by river-sea going ships;
  • oversize equipment (reactors, turbines, columns, modules) of up to 110 meters in length, 16 meters in width, 13 meters in height and 1,400 tonnes in weight by articulated tug-barge units.

Cargo is delivered from European manufactures and Russian enterprises most of which are located in close vicinity to inland water ways of the Russian Federation.

The company transports overweight cargo by both main rivers and tributaries to ports having no delivery alternatives.

The company’s fleet is able to transport oversize equipment through shallow water areas of the Northern Sea Route to the ports on the Ob, Irtysh and Yenisey rivers.

The company has developed unique technologies being constantly improved with the introduction of new vessels.

The development of project cargo transportation received an impetus in 2013 with the introduction of a new series numbering seven Neva-Leader ships with a capacity exceeding 7,000 tonnes. With their three 51-meter long holds, the vessels are in high demand for transportation of oversize cargo.

Volga Shipping Company carries equipment for:

  • oil and gas production and processing industry;
  • nuclear power industry;
  • thermal power industry;
  • wind power industry;
  • petrochemical industry;
  • machine building, shipbuilding, iron and steel companies;
  • infrastructure facilities.

Every year, Volga Shipping Company performs more than 40 project equipment deliveries. During the navigation season on inland water ways, the company undertakes up to 20 shipments of oversize equipment and non-self-propelled facilities by articulated tug-barge units.

Transportation of project cargo is the specialization of Volga Shipping Company subsidiary Volgo-Baltic Logistic.

The company’s skilled specialists with high competence are ready to arrange any transportation (towage) of project cargo.

High reputation in the market of project cargo shipping, knowledge, experience and new fleet owned by the company has let it become a leader in this segment.

Competitive advantages of project cargo delivery by water transport:

  • Lower cost of delivery with transport chain requiring no transshipment to other types of transport.
  • Possibility of direct delivery between a seaport / estuary harbor and a river port.
  • Advantages over railway transport in case of oversize and overweight cargo, absence of railway stations at the site of loading/unloading.
  • Advantages over motor-vehicle trains due to their high cost, hard to coordinate traffic timetable and obstacles on the way (electric power lines, bridges, railway crossings).
